"Is there an alpha you want me to call instead?" That question always hurts, no one was around when he presented and there is not anyone around now, he gives a hollow laugh. Even if he really needed his parents he cannot imagine them dropping everything and coming back even now, even with his mother being more supportive she lets his father have final say in all travel decisions. The man certainly will not come home for Steve, he had barely stayed long enough to repack their suitcases and hear the news in person of another trip already booked and unwilling to postpone. Nancy would just make things worse, she has tried to help but her scent is no comfort.
“I don’t have anyone to call.” Steve finally admits hunching down when a note of sharp anger fills the air.

“I care not for procreation,” the creature rumbles angrily from above, spitting out the word as if in mockery of the way Victor had intoned it prior. “I am not entreating you to make me… a child-bearing wife. Just a friend.”
Or, when Victor makes his assumptions about the nature of the Creature's request for a companion, instead of remaining silent, the Creature speaks up. This puts their first confrontation after the fire on a different path.
