Summary
She placed her hands flat against her body, pushing her ribs against them with every deep breath she took. The delicate beadwork tickled her palms. Deep breath in. Pause. Deep breath out.
The clock ticked and she counted backwards from ten along with it on her fingers. It gave her something to focus on, the simple repetition of a count down. It became a habit years ago, steady and calming when she needed to settle her nerves. It was almost time now and she counted.

Class was half way over and Nancy was just staring at the clock, trying to will the seconds to move faster. She didn’t notice Robin taking the empty seat beside her. “Your middle name is definitely Marie,” she said, causing Nancy to startle and whip around to look at her.
“It definitely is not. And is that your plan, guess Marie every time until you’re finally right?” Nancy asked.
“I mean, it’s a pretty solid guess, as far as middle names in this part of the Midwest are concerned, but if it’s not Marie, then what is it?”
“I’m not telling.”
“Why not?”
“If you’re so good at guessing, then guess.” Nancy was being difficult for no other reason than that she could be, but part of her also wanted to hold Robin’s attention for a little bit longer for a reason she couldn’t quite pinpoint.
