Sam lets his head fall back into Dean’s chest and looks up into his eyes. “There’s a lot of connections here. This isn’t just some coincidence. Happy couples don’t stab each other.”

They had been apart from each other, once. Those last days on the journey to Rivendell, Gentian growing more and more tired, quieter, more sluggish. It had felt as if he was getting further and further away, till they could feel each other only as two people stretching out their hands over a growing chasm. Till all they could do was brush fingertips. Till there had been only shadows and confusion, and he had not been able to feel Gentian at all.
