The words were spoken in such a teasing manner, but there was something tangible underneath, some sort of honesty and fondness, and it left James reeling. He couldn’t help but feel disbelief welling up in his chest while he wondered just where Gareth got off on making jokes about Tommy loving him, as if the two of them were close enough to do so— as if the two of them were involved in that way. And, beyond that, Tommy wasn’t taken aback in the slightest, not making that weirded out face he usually did when he was made uncomfortable by a joke or trying to play it off; miraculously (at least in James’s opinion) his grin didn’t even dim, seemingly only made wider by the adoring quip.
