Summary
The garden of the Lightwood estate had dried throughout the summer months and this was the first downpour in weeks, making the barren lawn smell of petrichor, a dour and moist smell, as the grass and plants gave off oil and reacted with the water.
First rains had a specific smells to them, especially out on the porch and next to the garages, where the drops pelted against the asphalt and gave off a stink as they mixed with mud, dust, and sediment.

Summary
Once, hidden in the dark and uncharacteristically intimate for both of them, Raphael had mimicked Simon’s movement in bed, inch by inch, like a game. Simon burst out laughing, pulling an outlandish face, and gripped Raphael’s chin. Raphael reached out and pinched his chin in return.
They lifted each other’s faces, moving it left and right, leaned in and pressed their foreheads together. They let go and traced a finger slowly from their collarbone to their belly button.
Like a challenge, they held each other’s eyes, all traces of humor gone.
For a little while, Simon and Raphael felt as if they were mirrors of some kind. Opposite, but the same.
Soon after, though Simon hadn’t made the connection, the first flicker of blue had appeared.

The facts were these:
Simon Lewis, aged nineteen, devoted indie-rock fan and comic book-lover, sunlight aficionado and devoted lazing-around-till-mid-morning practitioner, was a selfish fool who had a hard time grasping the severity of his actions.
Raphael Santiago, frozen at seventeen, a firm believer in discipline and self-sufficiency, ascetic and guarded on the outside, was a foolish narcissist unwilling to admit to reciprocal blame.
Oh, this can only end well.
