It all started with an understaffed college opera.
It was more a shitshow than an opera at this point.
Manon should’ve known better. She was a junior and very much busy and had way too much to do and, most importantly, did not know how to ever say no, and now, here she was, ass-deep into the fall with a new source of niche, targeted stress.

a chipped ceramic mug. on the bottom, in manon's messy scrawl, is the word MINE, but sophia had used it every morning for three years. she traces the letters with her thumb. the sharpie is starting to fade, it takes her back to a lazy sunday morning in manon's dorm, the one with the slanted floors and the window that never quite closed. manon at the piano in her pajamas and one of sophia's oversized hoodies, playing a soft, nameless melody that she'd never write down because she said it was just for them. sophia making coffee in this exact mug, humming along, the sun spilling gold across the hardwood floors. manon had looked up and smiled, that genuine smile that made sophia's chest ache with how much she loved her.
"what are you thinking about, mahal?" sophia had asked.
"forever," manon had said simply, and went back to playing.
forever lasted two more years.
