Not for the first time, it’s one of Miguel’s ideas that ends up irrevocably changing the trajectory of Eli’s life.
This is, of course, a different Miguel than the bright-eyed, brace-faced new kid who had yanked the blinds up on Eli’s sleepy teendom with four simple words—come to my dojo—this is 21 year old Miguel: pre-med, weekend EMT, broad shouldered and unfortunately facial-haired, packing up his city college credits and heading off to UCSD, where a one-bedroom with Sam and a razor await him. Meanwhile, Eli is walking with his A.A., computer science, a steady gig at CHOP Karate, one of the many bland dojos that had sprung up to fill the void left by Johnny’s retirement after the school fight, a few on and off fuck buddies who don’t ask for anything more than he wants to give, an ancient Subaru, and a desperate desire to stay in their somehow still affordable apartment—a whole house, with two enormous bedrooms, in-unit laundry, an always middling but occasionally fruitful garden planted out back in the time before they could afford in-house wifi.
Which is where Robby Keene comes in.

Summary
It is hard enough to just get by in life, living in the world as it is. But to learn your existence wasn't meant to happen, and to have to live it out as now merely lines of code, existing in a world that isn't real... life suddenly became a whole lot harder. At least being stuck as an artificial intelligence wasn't all bad. They still had friends. And in due time, something more.
