Summary
Frodo is dared by his friends to write a letter to the King Under the Mountain. Easy enough. It wasn’t like he was going to get anything back, the King was long dead, just like his Uncle Bilbo had told him countless times with each retelling of the adventure.
So one could imagine the young Hobbit’s surprise when he received a raven at his window with a sealed note attached to it’s leg.

“Give me your hand!”
They were struggling for the Ring, Frodo and Gollum, blinded by the madness of it driven into them like spikes in a railway track; at the edge of the stone Sam could see them through a strong haze clouding in front of his eyes.
“Take my hand!”
Sam stretched his arm farther down, closer, closer; Frodo reached up for him with all the effort he could, but his hand, slick with blood from his wound, could not grip Sam’s fingers. The mountain gave a great rumble, causing a cascade of rocks to tumble from the ledge where Frodo held on: his gaze followed them down in their fall to the lava below.
“Don’t you let go.”
Frodo’s eyes held to Sam’s, and Sam felt his heart shatter. Those blue eyes once felt like home to him were now more foreign than this terrible mountain. The burden his lover had borne for so long, slowly crushing him from the inside out, had found its home in both the molten rock and the eyes of its bearer, tossing Sam’s love to the curb and burying brokenness in its place.
“Don’t let go.”
The mountain rumbled again. Through the thundering of stones and the hissing of lava, Sam heard Frodo say in a ragged voice:
“I love you.”
