Summary
“Hello?” Joel clears his throat, sounding raspy.
“Joel.” His speech is slurred, a bit mumbly and the vowels rumble through his throat, but it’s him. It’s his voice. Joel could recognize it anywhere, even if he pretended he forgot. He hears it every night when he closes his eyes, the rumble in his voice when he yells at Joel, the groan when Joel manages to annoy him successfully. He hasn’t realized how much he missed it until he hears it right in his ears.
Grian. His Grian. The same guy who manages to plague his every thought, every reflection he looks into he sees how Grian changed him fundamentally. They say you find yourself unrecognizable after a relationship because of how different you are from your true self, but Joel thinks it’s the opposite with him.
He fears he is only himself around his ex.

“Being a bad influence is a title I hold with pride,” Joel says, and Grian can all but hear the smile in his voice. “They’re just lucky we aren’t dating. I’d be a real bad influence then.”
Grian snorts. “I think they’d lose their minds.” Not only would that be a much needed distraction from being back home, but the idea of his parents silently seething as they watch their eldest son dating such a delinquent (in his parents’ eyes, not his!) is more than enough to make Grian’s smile widen. Yeah, that would be the highlight of his month, if not his year.
…Hang on.
When Grian gets an invitation back home for the holidays, he has the wonderfully idiotic idea of pretending to date his best friend, Joel, for the trip. Unfortunately, things quickly go downhill for both of them as they quickly realize why Grian's been invited back.

The man hovering over him leaned back, releasing Grian completely. Cold night air rushed in to fill the void.
“I guess it’s out in the open now,” the stranger hummed. “Shame. I wanted to avoid this.”
With the additional glow occupying the space between them, Grian was finally able to catch features that were lost in the prior darkness. His curiosity outweighed all else, and he drank them in greedily. As soon as he saw who sat across from him, alarms blared in his mind.
This man wasn’t a civilian, wasn’t even a hero.
“Hello, Doctor,” the villain mused. “You were quite the help today.”
