The ocean had roared in his ears; for a while, there had been nothing but teeth and shadow and the white‑hot panic of drowning. Ao’nung and Koro taking him deeper beyond the reef. Their backs as they swam away—the akula’s jaws. Payakan’s bulk between him and death. Surfacing, then the long, long swim back.

Summary
...And he does not know if it was Payakan’s banishment— a part of him, torn away– that tips the scale in his heart or if it was his father's words that broke him but either way he is certain
of his decision to die and sink into it again. To return his borrowed energy.Lo’ak will pull the trigger and shoot himself through the head and by the time the hour has passed, the water lapping at his knees now will have claimed him and he will be free of this.
(Or: Lo'ak doesn't throw away the gun that night, but manages to survive his shot against all odds. Everyone comes to know what he did. How will his parents react to it? How will Lo'ak feel, having failed his attempt? And is there a way to heal after such an occurrence- not just his body, but his mind, soul and relationship with his father?
I have a ton of painful feelings and hurt / comfort planned. I've loved all the fics on this so far... and here it is my way!)
