“A real cat?" Her excited tone's gone, voice pitching high with worry. "Running around here?”
The whole time he's known her, Luka-san's constantly been on the brink of too relaxed. She moves without any real tension in her body, fast but easy, more like the wind than a person. Even when she sings, there's always a looseness to it that's the opposite of him, his own body sometimes tighter than a spring from how much power he forces through it. As unserious as she can act, he does admire it.
This is the stillest he's ever seen her.
Akito nods, shifts uncomfortably. “Yeah, 's that bad? It can’t fall off the edge or somethin’, right?” It's mostly a joke, but Luka-san's not laughing. Ice lodges itself in his chest, chills him to the bone. What does falling off the edge of the Sekai even mean? It’ll just kinda float around?
Or something worse?

Sleep deprived and lost, Akito stumbles deeper and deeper towards the edge of the Sekai, chasing the stray cat Toya accidentally brought in.
He can't afford to disappoint him. Not again.

Day 2 (Plushies) and Day 3 (Past)
Akito stops a few meters from the main road and turns to him. The strings of his hoodie whip around with sudden motion, orange hair haloed by the light leaking into the dark side street. "Hey, Toya," he says, then pauses, his eyes jerking away. His lips twist oddly a few times, and he shoves his hands in his pockets. "D'you—?" He clears his throat, voice lower. "What're you doin'? After this?"
Toya blinks. His mind stutters over the answer he's used to giving, reminded half a beat late his nights aren't spent on classical music anymore. His empty schedule stretches out endlessly into the night, a familiar song suddenly stopped midway through, and he still reels from it all these weeks later.
"I'm not sure," he answers slowly.
"Then you wanna walk around a bit before you head home? Stop anywhere that looks interestin'?"

Day 2: Traveling
Akito jerks as a weight hits his shoulder, his phone slapping onto his lap as it slips from his fingers. He slams his hand down to keep it from disappearing onto the pitch black car floor, jostling the new weight from the effort. Hair tickles his cheek, smooth and slightly chilled, and the familiar scent of coffee ghosts with Toya's soft breaths.
The hard case of his phone creaks a little as Akito clenches it, body frozen. Shit, he barely wants to breathe, but he can't help getting a whole lungful of of him, the clean, sharp scent as familiar as his own detergent. Like this, it kinda feels like he's stealing it in a way putting his arm around Toya never does, a vulnerability he's not supposed to get.
"Toya," he says lowly. There's no response. "Toya." He raises his shoulder, moving the other's head a tiny bit. "You're gonna mess up your neck, dude."

“What's the look?” Akito asks finally, giving in with a suppressed sigh.
Toya gestures to his school bag with his free hand, the keychain swinging in time to his steps. The bright orange color is like a beacon against the dark fabric, out of place with his handbook-perfect uniform, but it’s so perfectly Toya that it makes something in Akito ache. “You could put yours on your bag,” he says mildly. “I think it’d be nice to match.”

As though snapped to awareness mid-thought, Toya finds himself standing at the front gates of Kamiyama High after school. The trees behind him creak in the wind, bare branches swaying as dust and sand kick up around them. In front of him, the buildings across the street groan in solidarity, a little more of their already crumbling exteriors giving way and disappearing into the breeze, and he winces in sympathy.
For an instant, his eyes catch on the silver earrings of a student he doesn’t recognize. They wink once, twice in the sunlight before disappearing in the crowd, lost.
It feels like he’s forgetting something.
