Summary
Shane hated press conferences. He hated the noise, the lights, the attention, the inane questions that danced around truth and turned hockey- the one thing in the world that came naturally to him- into some foreign concept he was expected to dissect like an analyst. He especially hated press conferences because he was good at them. He was good at giving the shiny, pre-approved, stock answers with just enough earnestness to have people kind of buy them. He was good at being inoffensively charming and nice and, well, Canadian. Or at least he had been. Back when he was the unproblematic golden boy and not the deviant who stuck his tongue down the throats of his opponents and maybe tripped on purpose to help his boyfriend win a playoff game.
Shane and Ilya attend their first press conference as Centaurs - Shane is dreading it but Ilya is ready to jump in and help.

Hayden Pike was not a conspiracy theorist. Not even a little bit. Unlike many professional athletes, he had not received quite enough head injuries to be won over by crazies on the internet claiming that the earth was flat or that jet fuel can't melt steel beams. No, Hayden was a straightforward man who believed in facts and logic. He didn't overthink events or analyze interactions for hidden meanings. He was generally content to accept things people told him at face value, especially if those people were his best friend of nearly a decade.
So when Shane started driving to Ottawa more often, he didn't initially think much of it... at least at first.Or: A slightly canon divergent version of how Hayden finds out. Mostly book inspired. Set after Ilya moves to Ottawa.
