    Summary

Pearl gives Gem a hand-drawn gift for her birthday—something quiet, personal, and deeply heartfelt. But when Gem responds with an offhand joke, the moment slips sideways. Pearl, already unsure of herself, takes the reaction as rejection. The miscommunication lingers unspoken between them, growing heavier with each passing hour.

It isn’t until later that night, when Gem finds the drawing crumpled in the trash, that she realizes what she’s done.
