Summary
“John, it is three in the morning." The words snarl out into the radio, a savage growl made rough and primal by the rude awakening and the bottomless resevoirs of rage that have just been unleashed. "Why am I hearing your voice right now?”
"Oh, my appologies, Deputy." The Baptist quite literally couldn't sound more disingenuously smug if he tried; amusement so thick in his voice as he purrs that its nearly visible. "It's just that I've been terribly concerned about your wellbeing. You see..." a note of something different enters his voice, a bewildering hint of... sincerity? "Some rather distressing rumors have found their way to me recently.”

Summary
Nick Rye is starting to wonder if he’s gotten exposed to too much Bliss and no one’s bothered to tell him.
The only other explanation he can think of is that the Deputy just isn’t human, and somehow no one else notices. And that would be insane.
Right?

Summary
“Time is ticking boy.” Pagan’s voice rang loudly in his ears from the static of the radio. Ajay didn’t care to hear it. The ranting and raving, the constant promises of tough love and the betterment of him as a person. Ajay was sick of it. This wasn’t tough love. Pagan didn’t understand the meaning of that phrase. There was no love here, only a sadistic game for his own amusement justified as actually giving a shit about him.
Tough love.
Love was already harsh and unrelenting. Love was what got him into this mess in the first place. A love for a mother who gave him everything, only to die alone and miserable in a hospital, her body ravaged by a cancer that ate her up inside. The pain of the treatments was constant as she endured sickness just to stay with him a little bit longer. He wasn’t there when she finally passed away. He wasn’t there, not when she needed him most. But she forgave him, just as she had forgiven him when he turned himself in after the clerk was killed. She forgave him, with grief filled eyes when he enlisted in the Army to avoid a prison sentence. The pain in her eyes, he understood now after seeing her home country.
There was love, but it died in the midst of war.
