    Theo swallows hard, failing to dislodge the stinging lump in his throat, and he looks down, incapable of seeing the pack’s reaction—seeing what they’ll do when they see who Theo really is, who he’s been for so long now that it’s almost normal, even though Theo still feels like his skin’s stretched too tight over him. Not wanting to know how they’ll respond when they see the pathetic slew of jaded bones and discordant parts that he actually is, the worn-down skeleton that’s made a ghastly home in a stranger’s skin since he’s come back from hell.

    Theo used to always be in control, used to be able to switch from his animalistic, ruthless side to his stoic facade in a blink of an eye—it used to be second nature. It was, after all, how he had almost broken up the McCall pack last year.

    But then the pack took him by surprise, broke his expectations—evidently even the McCall pack could be cruel sometimes—and had sent him to hell. And all the training, all the sleepless nights Theo had spent being forced to learn how to hide, slipped out of his fingers.

    Because apparently, there were some things that made you forget what it was like to be in control, and getting your heart ripped out over and over and over until you forgot what it felt like to not feel an ache in your chest was one of those things.

    This has never happened before. There isn’t a training module for “teen with crime-scene curiosity and unlimited caffeine access”. No one knows what he’s going to do next, least of all Stiles. He’s never been in an FBI unit before, he’s as confused as you are.

    One minute he’s alphabetizing case files like some kind of evidence librarian. The next minute? He’s rerouting the coffee machine into a forensic data uplink — not a thing — just to see if it helps morale.

    Every day is a surprise email: 'Update: the Stiles has rolled an office chair into the evidence room and is giving a TED Talk to the blood spatter board'.

    And we all just nod, because what’s the protocol? There isn’t one.

    “So,” he sighed, flicking the edges of the papers. “Fake FBI badge, fake name, car full of weapons. That’s a lot of federal offenses and felonies in the making.”

    He kept his mouth shut, letting the man talk. It took a lot of effort.

    “Son, I’ve got a morgue full of corpses covered in goo,” the Sheriff sighed. “If it weren’t for that, I’d be sending your ass to jail. However, you’ve got a trunk full of items that I know are connected to the supernatural and I think you can help solve a problem my entire town is dealing with so that we don’t lose more people.” He looked up at Dean, his eyes narrowing. “I’m Sheriff Stilinski. For the love of God, please tell me you know how to deal with monsters.”
