He’s surprised when, as he's sitting on the beach, watching some of the other kids connect with their ilu for the first time, a shadow lands over him to come and disturb the easy blissfulness he’s managed to get himself comfortable in.
He looks up, thinking it’s either Kiri or Lo’ak. His blood freezes in his veins when he sees Neytiri looking down on him, extremely unimpressed. She purses her lips and moves around him to sit next to him. Spider feels his whole body shudder. His skin crawls as his mind is almost screaming at him to run away. She has put more distance between herself than Jake had but she is definitely sitting next to him.

The baby’s mouth opened in a silent yawn. Then he made a small, contented noise, barely more than a sigh, and burrowed his face against Quaritch’s chest, as if the worn fatigues and faint smell of cigarette smoke and gun oil were already familiar.

When the RDA recaptures Spider months after the Battle at Three Brothers Rock, they make a shocking discovery: he now has the ability to breathe Pandoran air without a mask. This is a cause for celebration. Ardmore believes the sci-ops crew can study Spider's body and find a way to replicate his miraculous ability in other humans. All of a sudden, humanity’s future on Pandora isn't limited to metal facilities and exopacks. They now have not just a chance to survive on Pandora, but to thrive.
While the sci-ops crew move forward with their invasive investigation, Spider asks Quaritch a hard question: “If they decide to kill me, will you let them?”

Canon divergence during Battle of Three Brothers
When Neteyam gets shot diving off the SeaDragon, the ilu they use to escape can't quite swim with three boys on it's back, Quaritch sees them struggling & snatches Neteyam, instead of Wainfleet grabbing Kiri. Seeing the gunshot wound, Quaritch takes it upon himself to aid the boy, as to not incur the wrath of Neytiri (and Jake, but mostly Neytiri), while eclipse falls and the SeaDragon sinks.
