Summary
Yes, Pepa was protective. Everyone knew not to mess with Pepa Madrigal’s children, unless they wanted a lightning bolt to the head.
But long before her children were born, those protective instincts were aimed at her little brother. Yes, yes, he was younger by ten minutes, but those ten minutes counted, thank you very much.
The residents of the village whispered about Bruno: el brujo, Bad Luck Bruno, he sees your dreams and your fate is sealed when your prophecy is read…Despite that, they knew not to lay a hand on him, lest they be faced with a furious Pepa (and, honestly, an equally furious Julieta not far behind.)
Really, Pepa was just teaching them some much needed lessons.

Summary
“Augustín said you made tea,” Bruno said, after a while. Julieta only hummed in response, and Bruno kept talking. She had missed him so, so much. “It was pretty funny, actually, since— since my door was open, y’know, and I had heard their conversation in the hall…” He swallowed, continued after a beat. “They stopped right at the top of the stairs, right, and Camilo said, heh, Camilo said ‘I think Tio Bruno needs tea,’ real slow, and Augustín waited a long time to respond ‘okay.’ And then he walked up to my door, and… yeah. Heh.”
The sink was empty at this point, both siblings taking up the task of drying what was left. Julieta studied Bruno, absentmindedly wiping her hands and setting the towel down on the counter. “I missed you.”

We don't talk about Mirabel.
That rule had been in place longer than Antonio had been alive, and was nothing new. It was simply too painful to talk about the child who disappeared one day without a trace, likely to die in the forest. Antonio knows the rule well, and he does not talk about Mirabel.
Antonio never heard anything against talking about his new BFF (best feral friend) Mariana, though.
(Or: In which Mirabel has long since forgotten who she used to be, Bruno has PTSD, everybody has issues, and Antonio just wants his familia to be happy for once.)
