Summary
Bilbo is irritated at Thorin for whatever reason and decided to express it the Hobbit way. Except the Hobbit was is subtle as hell, like overseasoning their food constantly addressing them formally, giving them gifts that are unsuited to them or sized wrong, the kind of stuff that can be really easily misinterpreted to people not aware of the implications
So to Thorin, Bilbo's irritation comes off as courtship attempts

Summary
Thorin did not know why he was doing this. There was nothing he needed to say to the hobbit at the end of his journey, and yet from the moment he’d left, Thorin pondered him fiercely, desired to see him well and happy again as though the hobbit had stolen his own personage and taken it all the way back to the Shire, under Thorin’s nose itself.
No turning back. Thorin did not know why he was doing this, but he knew he needed to do it.

Summary
So, maybe running off from the Shire to walk back to the Lonely Mountain on foot had been a stupid idea.
Or: Bilbo decides he‘s sick of his life in the Shire and spontaneously bolts to head for the Lonely Mountain. Luckily, he happens upon a delegation of dwarves from the Blue Mountains he can accompany on their way to Erebor.
