Summary
“You shouldn’t get attached,” Rei tells the sniper as they pull on their coats, skin hot. They’re outside in a small park tonight, a copse of trees offering shelter. Akai’s face is in full darkness beneath the shade of a ginkgo, moonlight on his hands as he adjusts his collar. “To me, I mean. Obviously. I’m not a safe person to – want.” He can’t bring himself to say care for. Never mind love.
Akai snorts. “Neither am I. I’m not interested in an office worker with a housecat and a favourite idol group. I don’t need safety. And I don’t want someone who’s not worth sacrifice.”
“Maybe I don’t want your sacrifices,” replies Rei, clipped. The smell of gunpowder and blood is in his nose, on his tongue, metallic.

Summary
Moroboshi glances at him, his green eyes bright. His long hair is wound in a thick, loose braid again today; it gleams like a raven’s feathers in the sunlight. It’s fallen forward over his shoulder, soft as fox fur against his throat and the clean cut of his jaw. “I prefer not to leave things to luck,” he says, his tone steady. His confidence is oddly compelling; Rei, who leads a life of uncertainty and long odds, finds himself drawn to people with the force of personality to make things turn out for them.
OR: Nagano, 1998. Furuya Rei is sent undercover to investigate a string of crimes connected with Olympic-level biathlon athletes. Coincidentally one of them is a newcomer to the circuit, a tall dark-haired man with a suspiciously clean past and eyes that smoulder.

Summary
It’s cold, but the cold feels good, clean and sharp against his skin. Something cleansing, sloughing away softness and feebleness. It twists around his throat, brushes over his chest, curls chilly against his ankles. This is the night that he slunk out into, Furuya Rei, the darkness that welcomed him years ago when he had only one face. If there’s anywhere he belongs it’s here, somewhere silent and cellar-dark, somewhere cold as buried bone.
Somewhere he can’t feel his heart beating.
