Summary
"Don’t you dare go down there."
He turned back to Erik, his expression hard, but with that edge of doubt. "I’ve got to check," he said, and it sounded more like an apology than a decision.
Erik rolled over in bed, squinting one eye at him as if he'd been woken by an airstrike. "Darling, you’re insane,” he muttered, his voice thick with the dregs of sleep. "If the toaster was going to kill us all, they’d be banging the fire bells, not your bloody bedroom door.”
Charles didn’t move, not at first. He just stood there, fingers pressing into the doorframe like he was trying to hold himself up. "What if they didn’t get it out, Erik? What if they didn’t put it out properly and now it’s going to burn the whole damn place down?"
"You really think they'd let it get that bad? They’re more stupid than careless."
"They said it was 'mostly fine,’" Charles continued, the words tasting bitter. "You and I both know what 'mostly' means when it comes to children. Mostly not dead, mostly nothing to worry about, until half the house is in flames."

Summary
“Peter,” his mom said in that casual, throwaway tone that made you immediately suspicious, “that’s your father.”
Peter paused mid-chew, the pencil dangling from his lips like a seesaw. “Huh?”
“Your father,” she repeated, pointing at the screen with a sort of vague, grandmotherly wave. “That’s him.”
He followed her finger to the TV. There, standing behind a podium, was that guy. Erik Lehnsherr, aka Magneto. He was going off in some debate on the news. The kind of angry, ranting thing that people either turned off or turned up the volume on, depending on which side of the fence they were on.
Peter snorted. “Right. Sure, Mom. And I’m secretly the love child of Elvis and Marilyn Monroe, too.”
“I’m serious.”

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single mother in possession of a teenage son must one day confess that his father is a magnetic mutant with a penchant for melodrama.
