Hange had nodded at the time, even repeated it back like a solemn vow. And then, the next day, Pieck came home to find a snake.
Not in their bedrooms, not in the kitchen, no. The creature was coiled comfortably on the narrow shelf in the mudroom, resting like it paid rent.
Pieck stood frozen in the doorway, eyes flickering from the snake to her roommate, who was crouched nearby with zero shame and a handful of lettuce for some reason.
“Technically,” Hange said, using their foot to draw an invisible line across the floor. “The living area starts here, so Hissabelle isn’t inside.”
