Summary
“So,” says Annie, tossing her helmet expertly onto her salmon-colored, itchy-looking couch, “how’d you like the highway?”
“The highway?” Mikasa repeats, dumbfounded. She removes her own borrowed helmet much more carefully, but no less skillfully, than Annie. Annie looks on, approving; it’s like Mikasa has been motorcycling her whole life, like she was born to feel the desert wind in her hair in the back of a Kawasaki.
“Yeah,” says Annie. “Full of cacti and all.” Mikasa smiles, ever so slightly; Annie remembers the plural of cactus is cacti, and she knows it would please Mikasa that she does.
“I wasn’t looking,” Mikasa admits. “I was looking at something prettier.”
“Prettier than the highway and the Arizona sunset?” Annie scrunches her nose, that beautiful nose of hers. Mikasa stares at it, thinks about it, thinks Annie’d look good with a septum piercing matching Mikasa’s own. “What could be better than that?”
Now the corners of Mikasa’s mouth are fully upturned. “You,” she says.

Summary
Once a week, Mikasa drives down to the city to get the post. It is peaceful, this drive; hardly anyone’s out on the road at this (or any) hour.
On the way back to her beat-up Chevy, she flips through them. Advertisements. Advertisements. Political advertisements, which are somehow worse. A long letter from Hange, containing a postscript from Levi. Blurry pictures from Eren and Armin’s new home, with her brother’s familiar scribbles underneath; she deciphers them like hieroglyphs, figuring out what each is saying. She smiles at Armin, absentminded, playing with the cat beneath a Christmas tree. A Save the Date from Gabi, for her wedding, forwarded from Reiner. And beneath them all, something that finally gives her pause: a postcard from Arizona.
“Can I come visit,” it says, simply.
Her mouth forms the word yes.

“More people entered the mostly empty club, and a damp draught blew in from the street, pebbling Eren's nipples prettily. They were early, but Mikasa liked to get places early and assess. She needed to know the location of the toilets and the fire exit.
“I'm not standing at the back holding your coat,” she said, shoving his ridiculous and alarmingly real fur monstrosity into his arms. Although, she considered stealing it when she left. It would look good paired with a certain sequined dress that made her feel like Marilyn Monroe in The Seven Year Itch sauntering through Manhattan. Alas, Historia would probably throw red paint on it in a fit of vegan indignation.
She gulped down the drink (for courage) and took in the people milling around the bar waiting for the opening act. The opening band was some West Coast lesbian punk group from Olympia, or Seattle, or Portland, or somewhere equally waterlogged and distant, and Mikasa hoped she’d get laid tonight.”
