“So,” says Annie, tossing her helmet expertly onto her salmon-colored, itchy-looking couch, “how’d you like the highway?”
“The highway?” Mikasa repeats, dumbfounded. She removes her own borrowed helmet much more carefully, but no less skillfully, than Annie. Annie looks on, approving; it’s like Mikasa has been motorcycling her whole life, like she was born to feel the desert wind in her hair in the back of a Kawasaki.
“Yeah,” says Annie. “Full of cacti and all.” Mikasa smiles, ever so slightly; Annie remembers the plural of cactus is cacti, and she knows it would please Mikasa that she does.
“I wasn’t looking,” Mikasa admits. “I was looking at something prettier.”
“Prettier than the highway and the Arizona sunset?” Annie scrunches her nose, that beautiful nose of hers. Mikasa stares at it, thinks about it, thinks Annie’d look good with a septum piercing matching Mikasa’s own. “What could be better than that?”
Now the corners of Mikasa’s mouth are fully upturned. “You,” she says.

Summary
Once a week, Mikasa drives down to the city to get the post. It is peaceful, this drive; hardly anyone’s out on the road at this (or any) hour.
On the way back to her beat-up Chevy, she flips through them. Advertisements. Advertisements. Political advertisements, which are somehow worse. A long letter from Hange, containing a postscript from Levi. Blurry pictures from Eren and Armin’s new home, with her brother’s familiar scribbles underneath; she deciphers them like hieroglyphs, figuring out what each is saying. She smiles at Armin, absentminded, playing with the cat beneath a Christmas tree. A Save the Date from Gabi, for her wedding, forwarded from Reiner. And beneath them all, something that finally gives her pause: a postcard from Arizona.
“Can I come visit,” it says, simply.
Her mouth forms the word yes.

“I'm not standing at the back holding your coat,” she said, shoving his ridiculous and alarmingly real fur monstrosity into his arms. Although, she considered stealing it when she left. It would look good paired with a certain sequined dress that made her feel like Marilyn Monroe in The Seven Year Itch sauntering through Manhattan. Alas, Historia would probably throw red paint on it in a fit of vegan indignation.
She gulped down the drink (for courage) and took in the people milling around the bar waiting for the opening act. The opening band was some West Coast lesbian punk group from Olympia, or Seattle, or Portland, or somewhere equally waterlogged and distant, and Mikasa hoped she’d get laid tonight.”

Annie observes the hungry, lustful cloudiness in steely grays, and then an idea presents itself. “Say, Mikasa…” Annie murmurs, gaze fixed on the plain of Mikasa’s abs as her hand follows it. “Why don’t you narrate how it feels?”
The startled noise Mikasa makes has Annie raising her gaze, and she nearly smirks at the disbelief in the other girl’s expression. “W-what? Why?”
Shrugging, Annie tries to play it off, avoiding the other girl’s stare as she examines Mikasa’s abs again. “Wouldn’t it be easier to remember those things? Or to describe them…better in the moment?”
She meets Mikasa’s gaze then, hoping it comes off as logical instead of how she really just wants to see Mikasa struggle to speak.
Mikasa’s throat bobs, and the longer she stays silent, the redder her cheeks become. “But that’s…”
Annie catches her meaning. “Embarassing?”
The other girl nods shyly, shifting underneath her. Annie inhales deeply, trying not to let Mikasa’s tantalizing body distract her as she speaks. “But don’t you need to describe it for the scene? It’s better when you’re in the moment, no?”

In this one concert, Annie goes close to the crowd near the stage, reaching her hand out to those who are singing and screaming the loudest. Mikasa knows it’s for crowd interaction, to engage the fans, but it still has her angry. That these strangers are touching her girlfriend. That they’re looking at her like that.
So the next gig they go to, Mikasa is beyond frustrated about this possessive burn inside her. When they are backstage preparing for the concert starting soon, Mikasa taps her foot impatiently as she watches Annie place final touches on her outfit, and the murmur of the crowd is overwhelming.
The crowd that will drool over her girlfriend. Clenching her jaw, Mikasa snaps, standing abruptly and grabbing Annie’s hand, wordlessly dragging her to the nearest room.

Mikasa seems to catch onto her fluster if the almost predatory gaze she adorns is anything to go by. “So are you single?”
Annie fumbles over her words again, her brain short circuiting as she turns her cheek, not wanting this girl to see her burning cheeks or how her chest is smoldered with embarrassment.

Mikasa looked down at her, observing her with narrowed eyes now. Upon closer examination, Annie’s ears seemed flushed, but her ice-blue eyes appeared sure and steady, the flicker of fire in them caused by the fireplace next to them.
Her chest burned, and she realized, all of a sudden, Annie was affected by Mikasa’s state as much as she was. This knowledge was somehow having Mikasa regain control of herself, despite her front teeth prodding at her bottom lip.
Mikasa attempted to concentrate, her head lowering, and her back curving. One arm reached out, hesitating at first, before she willed herself to move slowly, wrapping it around Annie’s slim waist. One glance out of the dark window, and Mikasa could dazedly decipher the snowflakes falling gentler now. Mikasa took a breath in, attempting to keep herself reigned in.
Her arm pushed, heaving Annie up slightly to position her against Mikasa in a way that didn’t require Mikasa to lean down. It was more efficient that way. She barely noticed the blood rushing to Annie’s pale cheeks now, subtle. Mikasa’s steel eyes flashed, and she exhaled shakily, the natural fresh scent of Annie swirling in the air at close proximity now.
