“What’s wrong?” a voice asks him from the side, and when he swivels his head around there stands Alhaitham, in his black turtleneck and chartreuse jacket and quizzical expression, and when Kaveh looks up again he finds that the sky is gone.

“Enjoying this, huh?” he murmurs, twisting the bud between his thumb and forefinger. Alhaitham’s knees jerk, hitting the top of Kaveh’s thighs. “I didn’t expect you to be this—”
Beautiful, he wants to say, the word saccharine on the tip of his tongue. His initial assumptions are false—no marble pillar can shiver as beautifully as this miracle of flesh and muscles and tendons, wonderfully reactive. Kaveh wants to take him apart, unravel the threads of his relentless rationality until nothing remains of him but this humanity, all this softness that does not quite fit right with the rest of him.

Summary
"Awfully forward of you. I usually don't put out until the third date." Kaveh rolls his eyes, feeling a flicker of pride for not flinching at the sharp look the other man gives him. "Jokes, Alhaitham. Might do you good to learn about them."
Alhaitham frowns. "Are you always so difficult?"
A peal of laughter escapes Kaveh. Difficult, as if he's a misbehaving dog and not an entire human struck into a tailspin.
"I'm making an exception for you."
Kaveh never expected to be dragged into the world of Sumeru's dark underbelly. And what he expected even less was to look down the barrel of his savior's gun to see Alhaitham, his childhood friend, the boy from his memories long lost to the cold man now before him.

Summary
Kaveh gets lost in the desert, goes into heat, and gets found by the one person who can't know what he is, or: Kaveh's No Good Very Bad Day.
“You’re not carrying me,” he says with a weak kick.
Alhaitham stops and lets his own legs take his full weight again; Kaveh’s ankle does something terrible for his self esteem and then he crumples almost to the sand before Alhaitham’s arm catches him again. One arm, because that’s all he needs to take Kaveh’s weight. He’s such a show off for a man whose ass never grew in. “Fuck’s sake,” Kaveh mutters to himself.
“You were saying?”
“Just—go.”
Alhaitham snorts. “Am I your servant now?”
“Yes,” Kaveh snarls.
