Summary

Phthia is the land of hail and snow, and this is what they all know, but on Mount Pelion it's always spring. It's like Achilles belongs there. 'The Flame of the North' they call him, for his fire-gold hair; once he goes, Patroclus thinks, all things swift and beautiful and bright will be gone with him.
Perhaps in another life, if Patroclus fell to his knees and begged, Achilles would take pity on him and stay, or ask him to come with him. But this is not this life. In this life, Patroclus hasn't the power to change... anything.
Or: Achilles is the young Prince of Phthia, Patroclus is his squire, in a story where they come together, come apart, then find each other all over again.

Dear Goro,
I have read and reread your letter far too many times to count. I've started and restarted writing this letter as many times, if not more. There's so much I need to tell you, that I've been meaning to tell you, but the timing was never right. I know that sounds like an excuse, but I had my reasons for not mentioning this sooner. Reasons I hope you can come to understand. I’m so sorry I couldn’t figure out what to say, or how to say it, sooner.

The shop is empty except for a woman slouched at the bar. She wears a simple green apron over a sleeveless white top that bares remnants of a stain hastily blotted out. The apron strings are cinched tight over her waist, doing far more to highlight the curves of her body than a work uniform had any right to. The owner, Goro assumes, if only because she’d hazard the number of employees could be counted on one hand. She’s an older woman, probably in her late 30s or early 40s by Goro’s rough estimate.
A mess of black curls fall around her face, framing her features—the gentle slope of her nose, the roundness of her cheeks flushed by summer heat, the fullness of her soft lips pursed in a bored pout. Though it’s clear she’d started the day with an attempt to look presentable, most of her hair has fallen from her ponytail. She’d given up fixing it. Instead, long, nimble fingers twirl around a loose strand; it looks soft.
