Summary
Will doesn't want to break the silence between them. Doesn't want to give up the chance to properly look at Mike without fearing he'll get caught.
He wants to tell Mike that he got the letter. From NYU. Will doesn't want to share this news with the rest of the party yet. He just wants it to be known between the two of them.
Selfishly, Will wants to make it theirs before it becomes the party's.
It's just that whenever Will brings up NYU, Mike gets all distant. It's like a chord is cut. A glass breaks. Something shifts in Mike.
Mike retreats somewhere Will cannot follow.
Or, the party makes a pact to open college acceptance letters together, but Will isn't sure where he stands among them. Mike's aloofness only spurs Will's worries about their future: as a party, and as Will and Mike.

“Just saying, if you’re taking another hit, you should share it with me,” Mike says, and Will slowly tilts his head, drinking in every word. “It just makes sense. Like, mathematically.”
Will’s reddened eyes narrow, bewildered. “Mathematically?”
“If there’s two hits left, we’d each only get one,” Mike explains. “But if we shotgunned, we’d both get two.” God, this is the best idea he’s had in ages. He should’ve stolen Will’s weed, like, months ago. “That’s like, bang for your buck. This is simple math, Will Byers. Keep up.”
In which it’s well past midnight in New York, Will can’t sleep, and Mike feels like they barely know each other anymore.
So, they get a little high. Mike is very normal about all of it.

Summary
“I bet your boyfriend's funny, huh?” he said, before he could stop himself. His eyes flicked back to the piece of jewellery on Will’s neck. “Nice necklace by the way.”
Will froze.
Mike wasn’t stupid. He knew it wasn’t just a necklace. It was a signal. A claim.
Six years after everything, Mike Wheeler has built a life of routine and avoidance, convincing himself that silence is the same as healing. Will Byers has done the opposite – he’s left, grown, and learned to love without apology.

“Did I do something wrong?” Mike questions, mouth twisted in a frown, eyes less wide than they were a few moments ago, sleepiness gone. His arms stay at his sides, although his fingers fiddle with his sleeves. “What did I do wrong?”
Will frowns back. “You didn’t do anything wrong.”
Mike doesn’t look like he believes him. Will doesn’t blame him. “Then why do you keep leaving?”
The world ends, and then some. Mike and Will find each other again, amidst the debris and distance.
