He lets out a small groan and she turns to see him slowly sitting up and rubbing at his eyes trying to rid them of sleep.
She turns to him and offers a small smile, spatula in hand. ‘Morning.’
JJ blinks at her a couple times, his hand comes up to run through his already tousled hair, his eyes focus onto her and Kie can’t quite figure out what makes his eyes slightly widen and his mouth fall when they do.
‘Holy shit,’ he breathes out.
Her first thought is that he sounds shocked, the next is crap, did he not remember last night? He hadn’t seemed drunk, but she can’t be sure. Maybe she’s just created an insanely awkward situation where he hasn’t seen her in two years and all of a sudden he wakes up and she’s in his kitchen making breakfast.
‘You really are pregnant,’ he continues.

After finding out she’s pregnant, for reasons even she doesn’t quite understand herself, Kie goes to JJ. Throughout the months of her pregnancy her and JJ fall into comfortable and entirely platonic domesticity that will in no way result in them falling in love.- Language:

This time when he walks in, the floral incense knocking him out along with the low folk music, she’s there at the front. Her service smile fades when she registers the customer.
“We’re closed.”

Relief momentarily takes his breath away, stopping his heart and restarting it again at a stuttering speed. He suddenly feels a little unsteady on his feet. “She’s still here.”
Mike studies JJ’s face with an expression that’s impossible to read. He nods once. “For now, at least.”
Something tightens around JJ’s throat as he feels his fists clenching at his side, not fully trusting himself to speak yet. Mike is still watching him with those dark, steady eyes. “Did you think we’d take her without saying goodbye?”
The response leaves his mouth before he even has a chance to think. “Yes.”
Mike laughs once, loud and empty. “Same way y’all did, I guess.”
or: When the Maybank kid shows up in the middle of the night, begging for Kiara to stay in the Kildare, all Mike can think about is how much he reminds him of himself.

JJ chews on the inside of his cheek before sipping his beer. It takes him a moment to come up with a response, his hand flexes over her shin but luckily she seems a little too lost in thought to notice. “I’ve got some experience with that, I guess.”

She slips her hand into his, before leaning her head back against the hard seat as well. She positions their joined hands on her thigh, lacing their fingers together, and he immediately stills.
His pulse jumps as his eyes zero in on their linked hands. It’s far from the first time they’ve held hands, and considering they just kissed for the first time like a day ago, it’s not even the most romantic thing they’ve done recently.
But the way she simply sat down next to him and held his hand, pulling it into her lap like it’s something they do every day, sends his mind spinning.
And it’s not that he doesn’t want to hold her hand, because he absolutely does. He craves her attention more than he probably should, and he never wants to lose the warm feeling in his chest, but he just… doesn’t know if he deserves it.

Summary
“Do you regret it?” she asks him finally. “Coming up with the love confession?” Her voice is blank, but genuinely curious. Despite that, Samuel recognizes it for the weighted question that it is.
Does he regret it? It certainly would have made his life a lot easier if only he had come out of the arena, if he hadn’t been forced to get to know her. But could he have lived with himself if Carla died in the arena? He would have spent his whole life wondering what her motivations were when she killed the girl from four moments before he dropped that tracker jacker nest. The recap of the Games would have shown that Carla was protecting him all along. Could he have lived with himself then?
“No,” he replies, honestly enough. He glances at her from the corner of his eye. “Do you hate me for it?”
When Carla looks at him, Samuel redirects his gaze to the ceiling. It feels too intimate, looking her right in the eye.
“I could never hate you, Samuel,” she whispers.
