Summary
'Harley's still not sure what she's expecting when the chair takes a sharp right and she's wheeled into a small room, but it's certainly not shoulders hunched in on themselves and clad in a white t-shirt; it's not the slight of a vulnerably exposed neck, the soft-sharp jaw, the loosely done ponytail of the woman whose heart Harley had ripped from her chest days (weeks, months, a year, maybe?) ago.
Her eyes are dull and dead, and Harley wonders how much of the woman she'd been faced with before was actually part of the girl in front of her. It's the same face, the same features; but this girl is plain; no makeup, hardly even an expression behind thin-rimmed circular glasses. The only thing interesting about her is the silver in her ears; studs in her lobes and a bar up higher, in her cartilage, and that isn't even that interesting.
"I wanted to thank you," the girl starts, and her voice is a soft, quiet sort of thing, but it commands Harley's rapt attention nonetheless. It's dry and sweet, and kind of sexy, and Harley presses her tongue against the backs of her teeth, anticipating.'

Summary
“Why did you agree to this marriage, Mary?”
The question is sudden, but soft. Mary can hear the hoarseness on the edges of the words; as though Henry’s body does not want him to ask it, but he asks it simply nonetheless. It is a simple question. Mary does not think she has a simple answer.
Mary thinks she is running out of answers for him.
“Duty,” she says, and he is still looking at her, and the burn of the sun is so bright through the window that he looks half on fire, himself. It could be an omen, or a blessing; or nothing at all, but the orange-yellow cuts his face oddly, ethereal, so he looks more marble than man, a statue of empires long dead. “Opportunity,” she admits; “If not England, I would have had to marry one of my nobles, which would surely have lead to my short death."
He says nothing. He stays still, standing frozen in the sun, and Mary thinks that she may leave him there and return years later, only to find him unchanged.
That is not the truth, though. He is as subject to the laws of mortality as Mary is, whatever their birthrights; he bleeds, as sure as she does. He ages. Time passes, and leaves scars in its wake. For both of them, it already has.

“I will not ask you to do something you don’t want to do,” Edward goes on after a beat, after he’s composed himself, his voice lowering from the heartbroken attempt at an explanation to something lower; an assurance. “And this is not about using you. You are not a substitute. You are not filling my place. You are you.”
Rosalie growls involuntarily.
“Fuck you. She needs you. She needs you and you can’t do it - you just said it,” Rosalie snaps, stepping forwards and away to turn on him, again. Edward nods, raising his hands up, palms out like defense.
“Bella does need me,” he gives, and offers the rest of the words like they’re the easiest, most obvious thing in the world; like Rosalie should already know it, somehow. “But she doesn’t just need me, Rose.”
And Rosalie just doesn’t know what to do with that.
