After saving Jinshi, Maomao assumed things would go back to normal. She would be his servant, performing various investigations at his request, and studying her medicine on the side.

Lakan has no earthly idea what possessed him to come to the garden party, but some star smiled upon him indeed. It nearly breaks his heart just to see her: in formal garb she looks every inch her mother’s daughter, down to the cunning expression on her face. She looks into her bowl as her mother would look at a gaming table, seeing many moves into the future. So he is not surprised when she announces the meal is poisoned, for he was already out of his chair when she decided to drink it.
How would the story change if Lakan had attended the spring party and seen his daughter in the Rear Palace? How does his persistence change Maomao's view of herself, the world, and her place in it? A story in which Jinshi is not as subtle as he thinks he is, but that's okay because Maomao would rather drink poison than commit a single moment's self-reflection.
