Summary
I watched Frith dial the number to Maxim’s office before taking the phone from him. It rang and rang, and I waited impatient and terrified. Finally I heard a click, and then, “Mrs de Winter.” Frank’s voice, dear loyal Frank.
“What’s happened?” I asked, “Where is Maxim?”
A pause. “I don’t think-,”
“Frank. Where is he?”
Frank’s voice sounded tinny and far away when he answered, or maybe my ears had stopped working. “Gone, Mrs de Winter. He’s gone.”
Rebecca’s boat and body were found; with it came an inquest, an investigation. Maxim confessed to his crime, then fled in the night.
It’s just like a man, I thought furiously as I hung up the phone, to refuse to take responsibility for his actions and run from the consequences. Damn him, and damn Frank too; damn them all. I would not run.

Summary
A story told in three parts; Hell, Eden, Earth - aka Sin, Virtue, Humanity.
(Hecate and Julie get there eventually, even if it takes them a while.)This story’s format (& concept) is inspired by the triptych painting The Garden of Earthly Delights by Heironymous Bosch, and my interest in religious symbolism & themes.
