Summary
I watched Frith dial the number to Maxim’s office before taking the phone from him. It rang and rang, and I waited impatient and terrified. Finally I heard a click, and then, “Mrs de Winter.” Frank’s voice, dear loyal Frank.
“What’s happened?” I asked, “Where is Maxim?”
A pause. “I don’t think-,”
“Frank. Where is he?”
Frank’s voice sounded tinny and far away when he answered, or maybe my ears had stopped working. “Gone, Mrs de Winter. He’s gone.”
Rebecca’s boat and body were found; with it came an inquest, an investigation. Maxim confessed to his crime, then fled in the night.
It’s just like a man, I thought furiously as I hung up the phone, to refuse to take responsibility for his actions and run from the consequences. Damn him, and damn Frank too; damn them all. I would not run.

For a moment the house became brighter, more inviting. For a moment it almost felt like Mrs. Danvers was showing off a house that belonged to her, like Mr. de Winter did not exist, like she and Rebecca had returned from overseas together to the place they would share for the rest of their lives.
