“Why did he hurt her?”
Her mother breathes a quiet laugh, though her eyes darken as her thumb draws soft circles over her sister’s brow.
“It’s his pain, Lina. She has to feel it, too.”
“Do you feel táta’s pain, too?”
Her mother sighs, straightening her back and dusting off her skirt, as if brushing off the conversation like lint.
“I do.” she nods. “And he, mine.”
The conversation ends there, her mother returning to the kitchen and leaving Karolina to stare at the hungry ghost-insect on her sister’s tiny leg. She runs her finger over it, her mind recreating the angry mark that had briefly torn her sister’s flesh, and silently prays her soul remains untethered, prays love never sinks its claws into her.

Karolina’s eyes soften in a way that punctures her, and familiar words buzz around Shiv’s ears, Karolina’s soft and soothing voice flitting between I’m so sorry and it’ll be okay repeatedly, perfunctory in the name of crisis.
Karolina sighs, gripping her mimosa like her next words are something to celebrate. “I never said you were.”

“How drunk are you though?”
And it’s laughable. It just is. Shiv can’t help herself. Maybe it’s because she doesn’t respond well to kindness, or maybe it’s because she’s just pissed off that Karolina still works for the men who ruined her fucking life.
“Oh, sure, so you can report back? Water cooler small talk and all that?”
Karolina’s smile is tight, fake.
“Not exactly. Your name isn’t mentioned very often.”
Shiv chews the inside of her cheek, already knows she’s not as important as she always believed. Not as smart, not as good, not as capable—Karolina isn’t presenting anything new. She’s only throwing Shiv a bone, indulging her craving for hostility in an attempt to curb her appetite. Except, when Karolina bites down like this, on the rare occasions that Shiv has witnessed it, it makes her that much more interesting. And being interesting to Shiv is water that Karolina should tread carefully.

Following the timeline of the series, set at the beginning of season 2, this story follows Succession from the perspective of two women: Karolina Novotney, head of PR and communications at Waystar Royco; and Finnegan "Finn" Roy, youngest daughter of media-mogul Logan Roy.Karolina and Finn have, naturally, crossed paths before. But when Logan finally convinces Finn to come into the firm, something inexplicable sparks between the two women. Something they shouldn't act upon. And yet, that proves easier said than done.
TLDR: Karolina Novotney was criminally underused in the series, and this is the appreciation she deserves -- given in the form of a Roy of her own that she can finally spar with.
