Summary
“Barnes, right?” Steve slipped his hands into his pockets as he surveyed his new partner. Tall, built, cropped hair, gloves, cock-sure gait. The archetype.
Barnes turned slow and returned the once-over, scanning him from head-to-toe. Steve could see the second it clicked in his mind, that this was his new handler in the flesh. And then, he laughed. An incredulous, long-suffering kind of laugh. Like Steve was just another in a series of practical cosmic jokes played on him by the universe.
“You have got to be kidding me.”
And Steve decided then and there, he hated James Barnes.

Summary
“But I...?” Hargrove asks, after long enough for Steve to go nose-blind to the furyragekillmaimkill scent, the Alpha’s jaw set and hands clenched in his pockets and eyes so easy, so blue, so- pretty. God, Steve should stop looking. Should look away, any second now. “Spit it out, doe-eyes. Don’t got all day.”
God, he has to stop looking at him.
“You call me Captain,” Steve answers, finally breaking eye contact to look instead at Hargrove’s fingers flicking his lighter again and again. Steve hopes the words say what he can’t: you were kind to me. From the way his fingers still, and the soft, barely-there pleased surprise blooms in Hargrove's scent beneath the rage, Steve thinks they might.
Or: Billy moves to the deadest part of the United States, meets the prettiest boy he's ever fucking seen, starts writing poetry, and everything - literally everything, from common courtesy to the food chain in Hawkins to his already-rocky home life to something so basic as his secondary gender - goes to fucking shit. For the better. Steve has panic attacks, spends most of his time alone, and swallows everything he's ever felt on reflex. And then he meets Billy, and everything gets, well- better. Much better.

Summary
"I could go home, and you could stick to eating Thumper instead of the locals?”
“Nah, Harrington.” Billy's tongue clicks against his teeth, disappointed. “You never make a bargain before? You want something, you have to give me something in return.” His hand reaches out, still laden in heavy silver rings, just missing all the jewels of a proper, courtly king. He drags at Steve’s lower lip with his thumb in a move that feels condescending, but Steve can’t bring himself to pull away.
“I don’t understand.”
“If you want to make a deal, you need to give me something I want.” He says it slow, voice gravel and smoke. “And I only want one thing you could give me. Your devotion.”
Or, Steve goes into the Upside Down looking for a monster. He's not expecting the one he finds.
