Today Vander takes a short, hot shower, dresses, spends a cursory amount of time grooming his beard and scraping his hair back into a bun. He anticipates a slow day today, which suits him just fine. They’re doing alright where money is concerned, and the days where he had to agonize over decimals are long behind him. Now it only means he has time to think, time to breathe. Time to hum to himself while he puts the coffee on, the scent of a good dark roast slowly permeating the air as he studies the bouquet on the counter.

The sun is yet to rise at such an early hour, mid-autumn chill weighing down the clouds and bringing with it a thick, rolling fog. In the distance the town’s lighthouse calls to him through the gloom, a guiding North Star, a guardian angel to carry his boat safely back to shore. Vander knows better than to come so close to the caves. He’s only asking for trouble; swaying in the water and relying on his anchor to stop his darling vessel from being battered against jagged rock, but…
There it is.
A single, fluorescent cat’s eye blinks back at him through the darkness, stunning Vander momentarily and with it snatching all plans right from his thick skull.
