It was day ninety three, hour fifteen, since Max had been awake.
El looked at the little monitor. Which didn’t show the days, or the hours. There were two small, red numbers on the bottom-left corner of the display. On the bottom-right there was a red box with a wobbly red line inside it. The line widened when Max breathed in, as if someone was opening their hands to show you what they were holding. When Max breathed out, the line snapped shut.

(Ava is the first Slayer in history to be raised from the dead by her calling. Beatrice is the youngest Watcher in history to be assigned full-time to a Slayer. It's just her luck that this particular Slayer wants absolutely nothing to do with her own destiny.)
