Because she was going to marry his brother. And that wasn’t about to change. Because she loved his brother. She loved him so much, really, that the only way they could try to get each other out of their system was by not touching at all.

Belly looks up at him from her lashes, lips upturned, as she goes to grab the fruit. His hand brushes hers, smooth skin warm in the heat, and she moves back to shake her hair from her face while he turns to put another bill in the tin before holding the peach up and biting sharply into it.
Conrad turns to face her again. She holds the fruit from her face, laughing slightly in disbelief. Her mouth is shiny and wet.
His heartbeat is loud. A steady, beating drum. “Was it as good?”
She nods with wide eyes. “Yeah, it was,” Belly says, laughing again as she licks her lips and brings the peach to her mouth again. She turns it over, catching his gaze as she takes another bite, eyes alight; the clank of flint on steel, kindle catching fire.

She’s read the story of his life through the marks on his body with her fingers, her lips, her tongue, to the point where she can map him with her eyes closed.

Water stained bright red pools around the bottom of the bathtub before slowly seeping down the drain. Conrad's head feels a bit fuzzy when he realizes all that blood is coming from him and he wonders if he's in shock or his adrenaline hasn't quite worn off yet because it's not as painful as he thinks it should be.
When he peers downward in morbid fascination as Belly gingerly cleans his wound before wrapping it with gauze and bandages, he understands why it doesn't hurt all that bad—because how could he possibly think of anything else when all he can focus on is how small and soft her hands are?
Belly and Conrad fall back into each other's orbits a lot sooner than expected.
