Xie Lian lay among a patch of brush for days or weeks, he couldn’t tell, letting his body knit itself together and grow accustomed to the brightness of the world. When he confirmed he was whole and unwounded, he snuck out to a river in the middle of the night to wash himself or drown himself, whichever came first. He didn’t look at his reflection– he didn’t want to know what a horrifying sight he must have been. He submerged himself completely, trying his hardest to clean the dirt and blood and who knows what else from his hair, his skin, and his robes. The water ran red and brown, and he didn’t leave the river until several hours later, when the stench of dried blood had lessened enough to be bearable. He thought maybe he’d drowned in the water. He crawled, dripping wet and shivering, to a meadow hidden in the woods, where he lay hoping that the sun would dry him off tomorrow.
It was there, the next day, that the red fox found him.

Xie Lian has been imprisoned in the coffin for who knows how long. When he finally gets out, he's met with a slew of problems- and an unexpected friend.

The red fox was quite sizeable for a fox, Xie Lian noted. Cute, yes– all foxes were, but this one stood about ten centimeters taller than a normal one. Xie Lian also catalogued, with interest, that this particular fox carried an air of confidence and had only one eye. It approached him quite boldly, and the silver butterfly flitted away at its entrance. Xie Lian watched it go, then turned his attention back to the fox. He didn’t say anything, hoping that the fox would get closer. It did, but stopped a little ways away, its single eye bright with curiosity. It didn’t seem too keen on leaving, so Xie Lian opened his mouth and tried to gather words in his throat.
“Hello,” he whispered, a bit proud that the first time he’d spoken hadn’t been a fluke.

The problem, Hikaru decides, is that Yoshiki is kind of a wimp. Yoshiki's gotten away with it for all these years because he's always been taller than the rest of them; no one's picking him out as an easy target at first glance. But if you know how to sniff these things out - and Hikaru does - Yoshiki's got that unmistakable wounded-animal quality to him, like a deer limping just a bit as it moves through the herd. The sort of guy you can't help but want to push around a little, just to see how far he'll let you take it.
Hikaru doesn't like that other people might be starting to see it, too.
