Years on from Bandee, part of him was still scared of how Ryan made him feel. The things he made him want. Jeremy blinks at him, and then at the road. He stops at the light in front of their apartment, and puts on his blinker. “That’s,” he starts, a little dazedly, “twice my weight.”
It’s not what he means to say. What he means to say is: that’s awesome. That’s great. But the damage is done. There is a blush rising steadily to his face, his ears, and a slow and pleased smile tugging at Jean’s mouth.
“I know,” Jean says.

Ryan had only been gone for a week. It should’ve been survivable, but Naim felt sick every time he went to school, sicker every time he texted Ryan but couldn’t see him or touch him. A week felt like a chasm he couldn’t cross, something dark looming over his head.
