Clenched both her hands and brought her fists up to her eyes, rubbing at them. Then, she reached for her phone, sliding it off her nightstand. It read, “14:32 pm…”

“ If you’re going to pursue this obnoxious dream of yours to pursue music with these low-life friends of ours then I don’t think I can love you anymore. “
Those were the last words Mafuyu’s mother had uttered to her. She remembered the cold, dull feeling in her mothers eyes. Her frigid expression as she raised her hand, only to back down once Mafuyu’s father had urged her to not go through with it. Never did she think her mother would act like this. Her mother who cared for her, her mother who just wanted what was best for her. She thought a mothers love was unconditional, warm, and kind. But her mother had never shown her these things. Instead she was cold, using Mafuyu for her own failed youth. She remembered her fathers disappointment; disappointment that his daughter was going to become a low-life pursuing music even though he had bought her that precious synthesizer. She knew he regretted it. She remembered that cold, sinking feeling etched in the depths of her stomach, the feeling of wanting to disappear. To get away from this horrible moment.
She would never find an escape, still she was trapped.
That’s what she had thought, anyway.

“ Aren’t you cold? “ Mafuyu sighed, her hand reaching down to grab Kanade’s. She felt Mafuyu’s palms squeeze tightly against hers, her warmth trailing into Kanade’s hands.
It felt nice.
“ A bit, but I’m on my way back home so I won’t be caught up in it for much longer… Where are you heading, Mafuyu? “ Kanade squeezed Mafuyu’s hands back, a mutual smile breaking out between the two. Mafuyu’s soft smiles, the gentle, rare warmth emitted from it was what helped Kanade keep composing on some nights.
“ I wanted to see you. “ Mafuyu’s blunt reply caught her off guard. Kanade chuckled, watching as Mafuyu’s expression changed into a more confused one. It was rare to know how Mafuyu was feeling based on just her expressions. “ Did I say something wrong? “
Today must’ve been her lucky day.
