Summary
Abby slowly looked up, and the pair’s eyes connected.
This, Max realized, was the first time that the two of them had looked at each other tonight. Actually, the first time in a while. Sure, they’d made eye contact and exchanged glances with one another, but they haven’t looked at each other. Not really. Not like this.
Max almost forgot what she was gonna say next. It felt like everything around her stopped in its tracks as she looked into Abby’s bloodshot eyes.
She blinked, snapping herself out of her daze, dragging her thumb along Abby's cheek to wipe another one of her fallen tears. “We don’t have to talk about it right now, okay?”
Or: Abby gets drunk. Max is there for her. It's impossible for them to hide from each other.

Summary
At exactly 9:17 a.m. on a Tuesday, Maxine Baker taught Abby Littman a secret language called "quiet talk." It was a language meant for when the world got too loud, but over twenty years, the silence between them grew teeth.
From the duct-taped hallways of Wellsbury to a 3,000-mile run to San Francisco and a high-stakes reunion in New York at age 25, this is a story of childhood promises, miscommunication, and the long road back to the person who always felt like home.

Summary
"Her mother claims it’s because Abby feels things too deeply, is overly sensitive, and yet closed off in the worst way possible. She lashes out and is a bitch – her words, not her mother’s – because she’s so afraid of people hating her for the true parts of her personality that she forces them to hate her first, on her terms. Because if she can control that hate, that anger, that animosity, then it can’t hurt her."
