Summary
Before the club season starts, Italy faces Brazil in a five-set VNL semifinal match where the atmosphere inside the stadium is absolutely suffocating. The tension begins early when Júlia ignites the court with her fierce Brazilian energy, celebrating every point right at the net, a display that the stoic Ekaterina interprets as a direct, disrespectful insult. Kate responds with cold stare-downs that sets a dangerous tone for the rest of the night. In the final set they reach a 14-14 score, where a chaotic struggle at the net causes physical contact and snaps the final thread of both of their patience. A mix of English, Italian, and Portuguese insults are traded through the mesh as Júlia steps directly up into Kate’s space and Kate refuses to back down an inch. The referee is forced to physically break them apart, flashing double yellow cards to a roaring crowd. This brawl cements their status in the sports media as bitter enemies before they even set foot in the same club locker room.

“Go away,” she snapped. She could feel the flush in her face that Halbrand Marion’s presence always brought about. They shared a politics class together despite the fact that she was a first semester freshman and he was a senior, and on the first day he had flopped down into the seat next to her and made it his mission to irritate her.
“You should be thanking me,” he said. “For rescuing you from Thondir.”
When she didn’t, he turned back towards the door. Galadriel felt a strange sense of disappointment that he had acquiesced so easily. Usually their bickering could last hours, even days.
Except he wasn’t leaving. She heard the soft snick of the lock falling into place, and then he was facing her again, a hungry look on his face.
“C’mon, princess,” he said, toeing off his shoes. “Why don’t you show me how grateful you are.”
