“Stop fuckin’ staring at me like that,” he snaps, with more bite than he ought to, a rabid dog backed into the corner, teeth bared, hackles raised, “you look… you look fucking stupid, bro.”
It’s an insult that sounded weak even to his own ears, and Ethan’s face heats up with a flush of embarrassment. Christ, it’s like he’s a kid again.
“I look how you want me to look,” Josh replies, this strange, flat neutrality to his voice that seems out of place with his usual cadence. It’s like he’s hollow, like he’s not… like he’s not real.
Right.
He’s dreaming, ain’t he?
Nothing about this is real.
“Fuck this, I’m going to bed,” he blurts out, suddenly, turning on the balls of his feet and starting to walk back into his bedroom. The ground feels unsteady, calves and thighs aching, burning, like he just can’t hold himself up, anymore.
“You’re already asleep,” Josh calls out to him.
Ethan flips him off. And, as he does so, he doesn’t turn around.
