"A family passed through here," the Patriarch stated. His sword appeared in his hand and he sheathed it at his hip. "It should be three dozen Wens. Where are they?"
Lan Wangji felt his lips flatten, offended by the very notion of answering. Considering what he had just seen the Patriarch do to the Wens around them, Lan Wangji could only assume the worst of his intentions.
Something flickered across the Yiling Patriarch's face. Then, oddly enough, he smiled. It was grim and understated, like a calm hand resting on a knife.
"You won't tell me?" he asked. Lan Wangji didn't answer. "You didn't tell those nice Jins."
Above an apprehensive curiosity as to what had happened to the Jins, Lan Wangji said, "Nor will I you."
Those eyes flickered again, this time with surprise.
"Oh dear," the Patriarch laughed softly, as if to himself. "What's your name?"

Xie Lian doesn't have the imaginative energy to conjure up anything meaningful for this stranger, so he says, "In that case, you might as well be Wu Ming."
The ghost bows his head further. His shoulders sink slightly, less slumping and more settling into himself. It's like he likes the dehumanizing name.
He says, "'Wu Ming' is perfect."
Xie Lian's frown deepens. He tells him, "Pick a different one soon."

After Xie Lian is tortured in his own temple, he wakes up in the care of a freshly-formed wrath ghost. "Wu Ming" follows him home and, with his carpentry experience, medical knowledge, street smarts, and fighting skills, makes himself indispensable to Xie Lian's family.
To protect Xie Lian from Bai Wuxiang, Wu Ming swears that he'll do whatever he must to get stronger, all the while becoming one more person that Xie Lian couldn't bear to lose.

Summary
Xie Lian's last believer is so fervently devoted to him that he seems to think mostly in the form of prayer. That is a terrifying prospect. Xie Lian has never heard of such a case before, not even in hypotheticals, and he finds himself hoping, for his believer's sake, that there is some other explanation for this phenomenon.
Whatever the reason, a low stream of his believer's thoughts hum in the back of Xie Lian's consciousness.
His believer does not seem to be aware of it.

When Xie Lian ascends for the third time, he is welcomed back to godhood with prayers that he hadn't expected: an ongoing stream of thought from his sole remaining believer. He gathers quickly that this believer is very old, very powerful, and very, very much in love with him.
For his believer's sake, Xie Lian can cast a spell to shut the prayers out—but only if he has access to spiritual energy.

It's a breathtaking splash of vivacity on a new canvas, where there had been no canvas at all for so many eternities. It is the most beautiful thing he has ever seen.

When someone falls in love, their loved one's scars appear on them.
Wei Wuxian isn't certain that anyone will ever think taking his scars would be worth it.
The Lan Clan has an ugly history associated with lovescars, and Lan Wangji has only ever heard about them in the context of the family curse.
There are no scars related to platonic love. For some, this makes romantic love look more painful by comparison; for others, it only makes it harder for them to express their love for their family.
