Summary
The fact that there would be no adult supervision was one thing. He was sure that his mum would merely be pleased for him if he told her that he had arranged a backyard barbecue with his friends, enjoying the summertime weather and forging new memories together. Especially if he had told her about these hypothetical plans and reassured her that there would be absolutely no funny business. Just having a wholesome time eating treats—hot and cold, playing silly games, and simply hanging around.
But he hadn’t told her that. And he hadn’t even entertained telling her that. Because that would have been a lie.
The fact that alcohol was involved made this an entirely different beast.

Even good kids act out at times. Nick's mum is out, and the gang have talked him into letting them have a get-together at his, with all kinds of booze, acquired through various means.

“I can’t lose you,” he whispered.
Charlie froze.
“I can’t.” Nick was crying again, hot tears running down his cheeks. “If something had happened to you tonight - if I was too late-” his voice teetered off into a pained whine, physically unable to finish his sentence.
“Nick,” Charlie breathed, a heartbroken expression on his face. “You didn’t lose me.”
Nick shook his head. “But I almost did. And I can’t - I won’t go through life without you. I love you far too much to do it on my own.”
Charlie’s breath caught as he stared at Nick with wide eyes.
“I love you,” Nick repeated, his voice hardly above a whisper. It was the first time that he’d ever said it out loud. Unable to keep it a secret anymore, not when it had been so close to Nick and Charlie becoming just Nick. “And I know I’ve waited too long to say it and I've ruined everything. I don’t expect anything from you, I just - I need you to know. My life has been so much better since you’ve been in it. You’re my favourite person, Charlie.”
“How - how long?” Charlie choked out. He was looking at Nick like he had two heads. “Nick, please. How long?”

Summary
"I promise you," Nick says, "literally the only thing getting me through this last term is knowing I finally get to be with you properly once it's over."
There's a note of desperation in his voice, and Charlie thinks about Nick's unplanned visit last weekend, the anxiety that seemed to pull him taut at unexpected moments, the underlying tension he couldn't quite put words to. Maybe it really is just Nick's mounting stress as his graduation approaches: a big, scary, looming Life Event that he's struggling to wrap his head around, and the extraneous stress is just spilling out all over them both.
Charlie hates the niggling doubt in the dark recesses of his brain that whispers, but what if it's something else? What if the problem is you?
University!fic. In which they're so close to not being long distance anymore, but something's clearly bothering Nick, and Charlie would really appreciate it if he would just talk to him about it already.

“Pity fuck?” Charlie smirks over his tea.
Nick shakes his head and digs into his own pastry. “Yes, that. You’ve been waiting all these years to meet someone who makes you feel safe and loved. And God, Charlie, you’re my best friend. Of course I want you to have that experience for your first time. So many people’s first times are utter shit. Mine was utter shit. I’d be an awful friend if I didn’t want you to have the best possible experience.”
Charlie has no idea where he’s going with this.
“So,” Nick says, a little nervous, “if you don’t want the first experience to be with me, then as your best friend, I feel it is my duty to help you find the person it will be with. If you want.”

It was strange, really. Charlie hadn’t known Nick for long, and yet, whenever he saw Nick come into the library he felt drawn to him. He remembered the first time that he noticed Nick in the library, situated on what would become his regular couch. At first, Charlie didn’t think much of it, obviously students would make use of the library as a quiet study space, and Nick was no exception. But somewhere along the way, Charlie found himself going out of his way to sneak looks more often than not.
Charlie couldn’t help but notice him.
The way that his fringe would flop into his eyes as he scribbled away at his notes, or how his nose would scrunch up when he was working his way through a difficult passage of text. Or how the corner of his mouth would tilt up in a grin when he started greeting Charlie on his way in. Maybe he imagined it, but it seemed like every time Charlie responded with his own grin and quiet, “hi,” that Nick’s eyes would brighten.
