Summary
Nikola pressed his ear against the door as he tried to hear what his mom was saying. He could just barely hear her voice and could only make out a few words: “...his father…demon...don’t understand why…happening…can’t believe…my own son…a meta…”
Nikola froze as those words registered in his brain. His mother had said that last word with such disgust and revulsion that he didn’t even realize that she was talking about him for a moment. Him? A meta? What was she talking…
And then Nikola realized that his bedroom light was still off and yet the room was as bright as day to his eyes.
And then Nikola looked down at the black claws sprouting from his fingertips.
And then Nikola reached up and felt his ears which had grown bigger and pointer and had strange ridges on the inside.

In other words, the story of how a boy becomes a bat (in more ways than one), finds a family, and maybe learns how to love along the way.
