Dan pushes to the front of the group and sees a man making his way from the large front door down the ridiculously long path to the gate. It reminds him of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, his favorite movie as a kid. He’s wondering if he should rewatch it, so zoned out he doesn’t notice until Willy Wonka himself is almost nose to nose with Dan through the gate.
“Yay, my Domino’s is here,” the man who is not Willy Wonka exclaims. The crowd cheers, as if him getting his pizza was the most important thing in the world. As if they were all waiting on bated breath, hoping, yearning for this man to be fed.

They become a regular feature, the pigeons, nearly ever day through the summer. I've named them now, it seems silly not to have a name for these creatures in my life: Dan for the speckled, Phil for the red-bar. And I'm certain it's always the same two. It's easier to tell with Phil, because of his coloration, but the way that they behave together, the way they know each other, the other must also always be Dan. They're together, mates, I'm sure. The boyfriends in my garden.
