And did they get there happy endings? You could say that... It’s not like they’ve drifted apart either, shared-trauma tends to have a particularly tight hold on people. But something had always felt off after the final battle, sure the lack of Jane’s presence was a high contributor, but there was more to it.
What if it was never truly over? What if, the Abyss was never destroyed, and a part of the Mind Flayer was still out there somewhere?
Maybe, two decades was enough. Enough for the mind flayer to stalk, and wait for that perfect moment—

Summary
Volume 2 & 3 Rewrite of stranger things season 5, from Wills perspective. In this universe Mike and Eleven are broken up, and have been since season 4. Will struggles with the idea of still loving Mike after he has hurt El. And as the months grow colder, memories arise. Trauma, hurt, guilt, but Will also begins to notice snowballs rolling down the hill. Turning into an avalanche.

“Wait,” Will said in a harsh, croaky voice. He felt like his brain was dribbling out of his ears and he fell onto the couch with a small poof of air as he stared at Mike in such a hard daze that it was a wonder he didn’t pass out again. “I - what do you - “
They stared at each other.
The air was thick and suddenly it was like Will could taste ozone at the back of his tongue, like electricity was coating his mouth and didn’t leave any room to breathe, to think, and his voice was wobbly, uncertain, as he said, “what do you mean… other boys?”

Summary
Will was an incredible best friend.
It was easy to lean back into the couch from his poised edge and let himself be swallowed, “too bad we broke up anyway.” Maybe it was a self pitying and selfish statement but Mike was feeling needy today. Letting the previous night alongside today's emotions take control was so simple, like falling back into a lazy boy with the TV lighting the evening.
At the tipping back into the couch Mike had retreated into the safety of his mind- that was plain as day to the onlooker. For Will this was dangerous as it was usually when the dumbest of Mike’s thoughts decided to surface.
“If only I could date you instead,” Mike’s eyes were lazily tracing the slight contour of old paint on the ceiling, “you’re perfect for me.”
Will and Mike are friends. Best friends. Both of them are determined to fix their broken relationship when the Byers family moves into the Wheeler household after the "earthquake." Except they've both grown up since the Byers moved to California and things are different- really different.
