“I wrapped it.” Mel flexed her hand, and winced.
She was usually proud of her handiwork.
It was standard procedure- when Mel was younger, and she was practicing her punches, the ends of her knuckles would usually be bloody and battered by the end of it. So she would wrap up her hands in bandages, and continue with her day, and usually, her hands were just fine.
They never really looked like... this.
“Okay...” Paeon said quietly, like they weren't really sure what to make of it.

Not a lot of people knew Dakota Cole was Native.
Dakota didn’t even fully know if he was himself until recently. His aunt had said he was Ojibwe, but what good did that mean when he didn’t feel Native? When his parents weren’t around to tell him what that meant, when he grew up never feeling a part of that culture, when he was white passing that nobody ever questioned what race he was?
How could you really claim you were something if you had never felt like you were ever that?

Gill stumbles as he crosses from the Albatross onto dry ground, and her arm shoots out to steady him. “Thank you, Jay.”
“Course,” she says, squeezing his forearm gently. “Now! We need some more rice…” her sharp eyes scan the market stall signs as they come into view, and her hand slips from his arm to hold onto his hand, carefully minding the webbing between them. She squeezes his hand and he squeezes back.
