Summary
Adaine is not in her bed. Adaine is sitting cross-legged on the floor, her stupidly round owl perched on her shoulder, eyes closed.
She's busy, Kristen thinks, and she takes a step back– but the door creaks behind her, and her foot hits a loose floorboard which also creaks, and she watches with a flustered smile as Adaine squints one eye open, her shoulders slumping. "Sorry," she says quickly. "You're busy, I can go–"
"-no, it's okay, I was just– it's stupid anyways," Adaine says, equally fast, and then she's patting the floor space next to her. "What's up?"
Kristen slinks towards her, plopping down onto the soft carpet with a groan. "I know you don't like talking about your classes," she says, grimacing when Adaine tilts her head curiously, her brow raised. "But you're the only one who– gets it, y'know?"
"Gets what?" Adaine questions, and she picks up her owl, shifting him from her shoulder to her lap. "Disliking classes?"

Summary
Riz rubs at the bridge of his nose. “Fine,” he acquiesces. “Open the cursed book. Go nuts.” He holds his breath, preparing for another cloud of arcane dust to choke him but, as Fig flips the cover open, nothing emerges at all. She’s left looking at intricate illustrations of fairy tales. Little girls in red cloaks, trolls standing under bridges, and beautiful fairies wearing halos of flowers on their heads.
It’s a storybook, Adaine signs.
“What’s so dangerous about a storybook?” Fabian asks.
-
or: After opening a unfamiliar storybook, the Bad Kids each find themselves afflicted by a different fairy tale curse.
