He gets a far-away look in his eye, and sits on the dining chair nearby. As if nothing happened, he goes through the motions of taking off his snow-covered shoes, and takes the beanie off his head. He sits there for a second after doing so, not moving, clearly lost in his own head.

This shouldn’t happen to good kids. His stomach churns with guilt.
